چکیده

Programming language concepts have inspired some networking design decisions. For example, concepts such as object encapsulation and interface invocation have been borrowed, at the time of their adoption, from an already well established object oriented programming paradigm. The authors suggest in this paper that it may be time again to revisit emerging software engineering programming paradigms to learn from them. More specifically, this paper discusses the practical tangling problem, embedded in conventional layercoupling (linking) network software design and highlighted by recent research proposals for cross layer design. The adopted solution is based on the aspect-oriented programming paradigm. We show its programming efficiency, limitations and role in the seamless enforcement of multiple policy scenarios while emphasizing little design changes. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Challenges in Cross Layer Adaptation for Multimedia Transmission

Over the last years a number of new protocols have been developed for multimedia applications in the whole OSI layer’s scale. In order to support better wireless user the cross layer design paradigm has been proposed. This paper presents the challenges in design and implementation of cross layer adaptation schemes for multimedia transmission over wired and wireless networks. In addition, the pa...

Trusted Virtual Domains - Design, Implementation and Lessons Learned

A Trusted Virtual Domain (TVD) is a coalition of virtual machines and resources (e.g., network, storage) that are distributed over multiple physical platforms and share a common security policy. The concept of TVDs and their usage scenarios have been studied extensively. However, details on certain implementation aspects have not been explored in depth yet, such as secure policy deployment and ...

A Call for a Backward Design to Knowledge Translation

Despite several calls to support evidence-informed policy-making, variations in uptake of evidence into policy persist. This editorial brings together and builds on previous Knowledge Translation (KT) frameworks and theories to present a simple, yet, holistic approach for promoting evidence-informed policies. The proposed conceptual framework is characterized by its impact-oriented approach and...

Diffusion of Innovation in Mental Health Policy Adoption: What Should We Ask about the Quality of Policy and the Role of Stakeholders in this Process?; Comment on “Cross-National Diffusion of Mental Health Policy”

In his recent study, Gordon Shen analyses a pertinent question facing the global mental health research and practice community today; that of how and why mental health policy is or is not adopted by national governments. This study identifies becoming a World Health Organization (WHO) member nation, and being in regional proximity to countries which have adopted a mental health policy as suppor...
